Craving Change Workshop – January 2015

Dates: Every Wednesday night from January 13 – February 3 (4 sessions)

7:00pm-8:30pm

Join our Registered Dietitian for a four part workshop to help you learn more about your food cravings and learn how to manage them in your daily life! Often we know what we should be eating, but implementing these changes can be the most challenging part. This workshop will help you identify your personal eating triggers and what strategies will work for you to be more in control of your cravings

Christmas Crafternoon 2015

Wanting to make a few special handmade gifts this Christmas season or even make some family treasures? Join us for an afternoon crafternoon fun in our art studio!

Carve your own personalized lino-cut stamp and print your own holiday cards and even use your stamp to make your own wrapping paper at home. Try your hand at painting baubles using an eclectic mix of patterns from around the world. Create a special holiday sign on a burlap wrapped canvas board to adorn your mantel, and use your creativity when assembling miniature vintage inspired shadow box ornaments. Yummy baking and festive tunes will leave you feeling ready for the holidays.

All ages welcome. Children under 10 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Space is limited to 15 people and is done on a first come, first serve basis. Purchase your ticket online to guarantee your spot today!

Mixed Media Open Studio Sessions in Ladner, BC! Come and expand your artistic horizons. Have you ever tried combining different types of art materials in your work? Using acrylic paints with chalk pastels, water colour crayons, ink and charcoal, or oil paints with different cloth or paper fibers can lead to so many interesting outcomes. Now is your chance to play and experiment with different texture and materials, breath new life into your work and fuel your creativity!

For those who would like to work independently, the studio is open and at your disposal. Hope to see you there!

Slow cooker minestrone soup recipe!

Slow Cooker Minstrone Soup

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups (1500mL or 1.5L) no salt added chicken broth*
  • 1 large can of diced tomatoes (796mL), no salt added
  • 1 large can (540 mL) of cannellini beans, drained and rinsed**
  • 1 large onion or 1 ½-2 smaller onions, diced
  • 2 ribs celery, diced
  • 2 large carrots, peeled and diced
  • 1 cup green beans, cut in halves or thirds
  • 1 small zucchini, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried oregano
  • ¾ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ cup cooked small spiral noodles (or other “shorter” noodles of your choice!)
  • 4 cups chopped fresh spinach
  • Salt and pepper to taste


  • Directions

    1. Sauté onions, celery and garlic in 2 teaspoons of canola oil over medium-high heat, until softened (about 4-5 minutes).
    2. Combine cooked onion mixture, broth, tomatoes, cannellini beans, carrots, green beans, zucchini, oregano, and thyme in a large slow cooker, and cook on low for 6-8 hours.
    3. For the last 15 minutes of cooking, add spinach and already cooked noodles.
    4. Add salt and pepper to suit your taste buds and enjoy!


    5. * You can make this recipe vegetarian by replacing the chicken broth with vegetable broth
      ** You can substitute red kidney beans for the cannellini beans if you prefer

What’s New in the Studio at the Creative Arts Program?

As the Christmas season approaches, join us in the studio as we begin several exciting holiday projects and themes along with our regular open art studio time. In the first 30 minutes for each class, you will have the opportunity to participate in demonstrations to help guide you in your creative arts endeavors or continue to work independently in our open studio.

As we remember those who have served and those who continue to serve, let us be reflective of our lives, of our freedom and of the hope of peace. Tomorrow, our Open Studio Session will reflect contemplation, the act of looking over one’s life thoughtfully with deep reflection. How do we represent how we feel in our creativeness? What images and words are we drawn to that best describe these things? As we meditate on the sacrifices of many today, may we move forward and express ourselves creatively with a thankful and contemplative heart.

Finding Your Inspiration: Using words in your artwork

Prepare your hearts for the holidays! Bring in your own or select from our collection, images, quotes, or objects that remind you of something that gives you joy, or represents a significant point in your life. We will look at how to incorporate words, quotes, or personal thoughts into your artwork. Uplifting designs and quotes will be available to give you some inspiration!

Open Studio Sessions are available Wednesdays from 10am-1pm or Thursday evenings from 6:30pm-9:30pm.

Open Studio Sessions invade the night starting tomorrow!

We’re excited to announce that due to popular demand, tomorrow night will be the first time we’re opening up our art studio for Open Studio Sessions on Thursday nights from 6:30pm-9:30pm! $35+GST for 3 hours of creative fun, and if you claim our offer on our Facebook page, you get 25% off your first visit!

Seeking inspiration for your creativity? Looking to unload some stress and get your motivation back? Our open studio has a wide range of materials and art activities to offer. We have designed a few ways to get the creative juices started!

Try-Me-Trays

This rolling cart holds 6 easy to grab trays. Each tray has a different type of art medium with instructions and supplies. This gives you a feel for certain materials. Simply try it and then select another!

Kick-Start-Art-Cards

This zippered pouch contains photographs, magazine clippings, graphics, and designs. Pick two images at random and choose one of the images to work from. Get started by sketching, sculpting, painting, or doodling by using inspiration from the image you selected.

Curio-Cues

There is no place better to start then still-life objects. Select from a variety of still-life objects from around the room and from our yellow curio box of treasures. Sketching, shading, and contouring are great places to begin before painting or attempting larger scale pieces.

Inspirational Books

Flip through our wide variety of books to get some inspiration. We have a wide variety of books: how-to books (on painting, drawing, journalling, card-making etc.), adult-colouring books, and art-related books (on artists, graphics, art-topics etc).

There are so many ways to access your imagination, you just need to start somewhere!

The motivation behind the creative arts program

I’m Meg Neufeld, and I am the co-founder, Program Director, and Art Facilitator at Alongside You.

I am a wife of a counselor and I provide support to a husband who loves his job but can’t share the details of his day.

I am a twin to a sister who is profoundly deaf and who has a rare genetic form of dwarfism, but who has the drive and strength like nobody else I have met.  She has a Masters degree in the health field, a job that helps others every day, is a fabulous aunt and does not let her physical stature get in the way of traveling to new parts of the world every chance she gets. She has taught me about living life the best way you can, with strength in adversity.

I am a mother to two beautiful daughters who are only a year apart. Day by day I am learning how to navigate their various personalities and challenges while juggling activities, doctor’s appointments, family commitments, all while trying to provide a positive and stable home environment to our children. One smile or hug makes it all worth it.

Everyone gains strength from somewhere or something. While I work with people who come from various faith backgrounds, I am a follower of Jesus. I do all things with His strength. I strive to have a compassion for others and believe that everyone is wonderfully unique.

I am a patient. I visit local health practitioners monthly who help me manage chronic pain from a previous motor vehicle accident. I know what it is like to walk the long road of recovery and to have good pain days and bad pain days. I know what it’s like to take two steps forward and three steps back. I know how hard it is to find the strength to overcome an injury; I’m not out of the woods, but the light is at the end of the tunnel. It flickers and flickers, encouraging me to keep at it and to work at reaching it.

I am an anthropologist and educator. I study people and how people interact with each other and how they create meaning and share basic practices; I study culture. I was lucky enough to teach at a university and college level and highlight the importance of being culturally sensitive, being culturally aware, and being holistic in our thinking. Studying how people relate to each other and acknowledging that things like the role of politics, religion, psychology, and history are not separate from the individual. These are essential components to our lives and important for understanding one another.

I am a Francophile, or someone who appreciates French language and culture.  Although we only have a link to a distant French relative, our children go to a Francophone school and we try and speak French at home as well as English. It has really made us love our little community even more and has made us aware of issues of National identity.

Why am I being so open?

An Art Facilitator is Not simply an Art Instructor….

An art facilitator does not simply teach artistic skills, but is someone who encourages a healthy, open, and productive environment while creating art. It is from our experiences that we are able to relate to others in small and big ways that move us to create and to be emotional. All of these experiences and aspects of my life shape who I am. As an art facilitator, I hope to bring people together so that they can make meaningful connections with others .  With my background in Cultural Anthropology, I hope to foster cross-cultural appreciation and be a communicator between different groups of people, whether they are of different ages, social backgrounds, abilities, or interests. I hope to continue to be socially inclusive, and culturally attuned to what our local community needs and wants, and to be more effective in our policy-making and program development at Alongside You. As an art facilitator, it is important to know about what is happening in our little corner of the world, be aware of the struggles of others, and be sensitive when addressing them. It is an art facilitator’s role to provide a space where people feel at home and encouraged, and where they can gain confidence personally and creatively.

As a counsellor’s wife, and as an anthropologist who holds to holistic principles, I have learned over the years that I may only be privy to one aspect of someone’s life and that there may be so many other parts to a person’s life that we know nothing  about, so we must be gracious and kind as someone creates something new, you never really know what someone is going through.

Hi Everyone,

 

I’m Meg and I’ll be coordinating the Creative Arts Programs. As one of the Co-Founders of Alongside You I am so excited to be a part of this new program!

My Vision

Simply put, I want our art space to be a welcoming, inclusive place to create art. You don’t need to be an artist to join. Everyone is welcome!

I want our art programs to be a place where people can gather, chat, experiment with new art materials and leave feeling encouraged. Our aim is to provide a space where people can connect socially, foster personal growth, and improve health-related concerns.

Our Arts Programs Within An Integrated Health Clinic

You may be wondering why we have an art program alongside counselling, occupational therapy, group therapy, and dietitian services. Creative activity can help with stress and anxiety management, pain management; it may protect against aging, increase positive emotions and self-worth while learning new skills; it is also a fun way to connect with others and to build your social support network. Our creative arts programs do not require a referral. If you would like to see our other practitioners, you can reach them by phone or connect through email via our website to make an appointment.

How do our Creative Arts Programs differ from other art programs out there?

1. You have access to a wide variety of arts and crafts materials at your fingertips!

In our three hour Open Studio Sessions, you can choose from our arts and crafts materials in the studio (watercolor, pastels, acrylic painting, beading, and much more). This allows you to try new things and see what you like. Art demonstrations on specific techniques or materials, such as clay masks, plaster of Paris sculpture, speedball printing, and scratchboard etching will be held during the first hour of class for those who want to participate.

2. Our Programs offer flexibility!

There is no cancellation policy when you purchase session passes for our Open Studio Sessions. This allows for ultimate flexibility. Simply book yourself in or out of our online or over the phone calendar system and we will see you next time.

Our no cancellation policy provides participants who may have mental, behavioral, or medical health issues such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain, the option of coming to class that day or re-booking to come to another class. For those who may have difficulties accessing or using mainstream or standard arts or recreational programs, this is a great alternative!

3. Our Open Studio Sessions are not age/ability/diagnosis specific:

In our Open-Art Studio Sessions, people of all ages, abilities, and diagnoses are welcome to join in creating art. We encourage the culture of inclusion and sharing of knowledge between people of different ages, abilities and diagnoses. We acknowledge that everyone is wonderfully unique, and we believe we can all benefit from sharing experiences together.

A creative or artistic setting offers a more neutral and less intimidating setting, allowing for a more open environment for people of all backgrounds to be together. Making art is one way that everyone can connect socially with others and feel more empowered.

*Please note: Kids under the age of 10 must be accompanied by a paying adult. Parents of kids over the age of 10 must sign a waiver form to leave them at our programs on their own. Attendants for those needing special assistance can attend free of charge.
