About Ava

Hi, I’m Ava! I’m passionate about supporting kids and families, especially those facing mental health challenges or living with disabilities. I’ve helped run workshops and art camps for children with disabilities and volunteer with the Step Forward Health Society, a local charity that partners with Alongside You. Through the charity, I have co-led a summer sports camp for at-risk youth and volunteered at their Launching Forward Event (2024) and their Move for Mental Health walk (2025) with my friends and family.

At my school South Delta Secondary School, I’ve been part of the Here for Peers club, where we ran mental health workshops for elementary students—teaching them how to manage tough emotions and ask for help. I also volunteer at my church’s children’s ministry, building connections with kids and helping during Sunday school.

As someone with learning disabilities, ADHD, and anxiety, I know firsthand how important it is to feel heard and supported. That’s why I’m so committed to creating safe, welcoming spaces where kids feel seen and valued. Over the past few years, I’ve connected with hundreds of children, sharing stories, listening, and reminding them that they matter and all have something to offer the world.

What is Ava’s role?

My role is as the art studio assistant. I organize supplies, help prep for workshops and classes, assist in delivering any programs, specifically our All-Abilities class. I also just help behind the scenes when needed and attend events to pitch in.

When did Ava join Alongside You?

I’ve been volunteering at the clinic for about 4 years now, both in the art studio and at events. I started because I love helping people, and my family has always said I have a natural way of connecting with others. As someone who lives with disabilities and mental health challenges myself, I find it easier to relate to others—especially youth—who are going through tough times. I really enjoy being at the clinic because the staff are genuinely kind and here to make a difference.

What are Ava’s values?

My values are kindness, connection, understanding, trust, loyalty, honesty and, acceptance.

What does Ava do outside of work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my close friends and family, playing Minecraft, and hanging out with young kids. I also have a fascination with making and playing with slime—it is a way for me to relieve anxiety and stress. I really like traveling with my family and seeing the world, and wish I could do more of that! I love cooking and baking, watching action movies, with my family and friends. I’ve been told I have a sense of humour, which is probably why I love funny tv shows so much!
