When and why did Ruth join Alongside You?

I joined Alongside You in September 2023 as a tutor. I love helping kids (or adults) overcome hurdles in their schooling and seeing how that gives them courage and builds their confidence for other areas of their lives.

What would Ruth be doing if she did not pursue the career path she has right now?

Perhaps I’d still be teaching English to newcomers to Canada. Or possibly I would still be in Japan still teaching there. At any rate I’d probably be teaching something to someone because it’s what I enjoy.

How does Ruth relax when she is outside of work?

I love being outside. This often takes the form of going for walks with my husband at Lily Point, Deas Island, or another of the nearby forest parks. I also enjoy cycling, gardening, and reading, especially outside on a sunny day, as well as playing piano, not necessarily outside, (although I have noticed there is a piano outside near Sharkey’s).

What does Ruth consider to be the most important value? 

Compassion, because in addition to caring and helping, compassion means respecting and valuing others and seeing them as someone I can learn from too.
