Our Story
Promoting accessible health care. Because people matter.
The vision for Alongside You started many years ago. I’ve wanted to be a counsellor since I was 13 years old. I have dealt with anxiety and depression from an early age but wasn’t able to talk to anyone about it until much later in life. I believe that even at 13 years old, I knew how hard it was to confront my own struggles, and talk to someone about it and I wanted to be someone who connected with others who struggled and brought hope. Meg’s passion for art has been lifelong as it was something she could do easily with her twin sister, who has rare medical conditions. Meg studied fine arts, museum studies, and cultural anthropology at UBC and began teaching at UBC and Douglas College. In November of 2011, we were in a car accident that changed the course of our lives. To make a very long story short, Meg’s ability to work at her job was over. By April 2015, Meg was starting to improve and I was becoming disillusioned with my role in the health authorities; I wanted to address the gaps in services in our local community, quickly and effectively, and in ways I couldn’t in my job at the time. Since moving to South Delta in 2006 and becoming a part of the community we wanted to make an impact. So, in April 2015 Meg and I made the decision for me to leave the health authorities as of June 2015 and open our own integrated health clinic.
We knew we wanted our space to be welcoming, non-clinical in nature; a place people could feel safe, at home, and at peace. We have been able to provide all of our services on a sliding fee scale; to our great joy, have never turned anyone away who has needed services. We have started many programs based on needs in the community and have been able to provide all of our services to clients of all abilities, backgrounds, and socio-economic status. It has been a whirlwind, but our dream for providing multidisciplinary health services for South Delta has been realized and is growing. This is not simply due to our vision, but due to our incredible staff and associates who share this same vision, and the community of South Delta who has embraced us, supported us along the way, and joined our efforts to serve the community through fundraisers and events. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve the community. This is truly where we want to be and are excited for what the future holds.
