Counselling Intern

When and why did you join Alongside You?

I discovered I’d be joining the Alongside You team in March 2018 and officially begin my position in September. I joined Alongside You because of their focus and presence in their community, their passion towards mental health, and the overall working environment.

What is your day-to-day role at Alongside You?

I am a counselling intern learning how to be an effective therapist! My time is divided between seeing clients and learning from more experienced counsellors.

What skills do you need for your role at Alongside You?

A lot of empathy, effective listening, and confidence.

What do you love the most about Alongside You?

The kind, supportive atmosphere of the working environment.

What would you be doing if you did not pursue the career path you have right now?

I would have been a dietician. I have always been interested in food and how it affects the body. Plus, any career about food and eating seemed like a good one.

How do you relax when you are outside of work?

I’m a very social person so I relax by spending time with my friends and family. I also read a lot when I’m not working or studying.

What do you consider the most important value?

Authenticity! In my experience, it is always best to embrace every part of yourself and to be as genuine as you can be.

What kind of organizations/networks/communities are you connected/associated with?

Not a lot at the moment because of school commitments, however, I just finished a practicum at the Vancouver Aquarium’s education department. I still keep in touch with them and occasionally volunteer there when I have free time.
