About Heather

Hello! I am a master’s student intern, completing my designation at Yorkville University. I’ve always been interested in counselling and a forced career change due to the pandemic lead me to pursue this passion. As a new counsellor, I promise to provide a safe, non-judgmental, and compassionate environment where you feel understood and supported. I believe in a collaborative approach and am passionate about connecting with people and working together to find your strengths and set meaningful goals. Life can be hard and cause suffering; we will work together to develop acceptance, self-compassion, and connections in your life. I look forward to learning from my clients and pursuing a journey of growth together.

When and why did Heather join Alongside You?

I am thrilled to join Alongside You as a practicum student as of May 2023. Being a Ladner resident, I was familiar with the great reputation of Alongside You and I believe that learning at this clinic will be a wonderful experience working with knowledgeable professionals and people in my community.

How do you relax when you are outside of work?

Alongside family and friends, I love to spend time outdoors, being active. Camping, skiing, canoeing, and volleyball occupy my spare time when the weather permits. I also love to read and travel.

What would you be doing if you did not pursue the career path you have right now?

Almost weekly, I get asked if I’m a teacher, indicating it would have been a suitable career choice for me. I love connecting with children and teens and am interested in pursuing specialized counselling with that population as my career grows. I’ve also always thought it would be fascinating to be a travel photographer, getting to experience new places and meeting people from all over the world!

What do you consider the most important value?

Two values that stand out to me are integrity and compassion. Having strong moral principles and treating people with kindness can go a long way when it comes to leading a full and meaningful life.
