About Abi

I am in the process of completing my Masters in Marriage and Family Therapy at Trinity Western University. I am passionate about helping others and have been working in the public healthcare system as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse for the past 13 years. I have extensive experience in both inpatient and community settings, working within multidisciplinary teams to support people suffering from mild to severe mental health issues. I am pursuing training as a counsellor in order to grow as a holistic mental health practitioner who combines the benefits of both medical and psychotherapeutic approaches in relieving emotional and mental suffering. I am passionate about providing compassionate care to the whole person (body, mind, soul and spirit) and integrating family systems theories in supporting people in their journey to wellness – I believe in the transformative power of healthy relationships (with self, others and one’s environment) to bring about health and wellbeing. I care deeply about people’s wellbeing and consider it a privilege to walk alongside people in their journey towards wholeness. My approach is collaborative, sensitive, warm, respectful and genuine.

I am interested in helping people get to the core of their struggles as well as grow in self compassion by using approaches such as Internal Family Systems and Emotionally Focused Therapy.

When and why did Abi join Alongside You?

I joined Alongside You because of the exciting opportunity to be mentored by professionals who have extensive knowledge and experience in both the private and public sector of health care service delivery. I am excited to learn more about how my practice as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse can integrate with my psychotherapeutic practice so that I can provide clients with a richer experience.

What would Abi be doing if she did not pursue the career path she has right now?

I would be a life long student and would love to keep learning about the integration of faith and psychotherapy.

How does Abi relax when she is outside of work?

I deeply crave quiet time (which is hard to come by with two young children!) to read and write. I love taking walks in nature with my labradoodle, Titus, and watching movies with my husband.

What does Abi consider to be the most important value?

My core values include faith, family and service. In my experience, I find the most meaning when I find my purpose outside of myself; this allows me to deeply value those around me as well as persevere during difficulties. I believe that the greatest gift people can contribute to society is to ensure their homes are healthy so that children can grow up into healthy, well adjusted individuals. I also believe that the greatest satisfaction that people can experience in life comes from serving others.
